Mental Mastication 001 (Ryan’s Content Consumption)

The longer I wait to send you this, the less likely it will ever see the light of day.

It’s a collection I’ve everything I’ve listened to throughout the week. In this case, it was last week. If you’re wondering how I filled my mind with so much to “chew” on (hence: mastication), it’s because we drove down to SoCal (I got a lot of podcast quality time).

What this to be a weekly thing I do, but I don’t know where I’ll find the time. I learn so many gold nuggets of info that I want to share. I teach because I love to teach, but teaching also allows me to learn the material even deeper.

Below are some thoughts on each episode I listened to (the ones I had time to write about)

If you’re interested in the full list of my Mental Mastication, you see the full blog post here. I will eventually update the post write some notes on each, as I learned quite a bit from each.

I want to turn this weekly email segment into a podcast eventually. I got the idea from Tim Ferriss 5-bullet weekly emails. Eventually I’ll include books and eventually I’ll update this post.

Where do I begin?  Wow, what amazing conversation!  This podcast was nominated for podcast of the year through Product Hunt. From what I can tell on the website, it got a golden kitty award second to another Tim Ferriss Podcast Episode with his interview of Jamie Foxx (which by the way, is also worth listening to!).

There really so much to write and I wish I could recall everything, but I want to share some major takeaways that are at the top of my mind.

Reading.  I need and want to become a better reader.  I love devouring information (if you can’t tell) and if I can read I can devour even faster!  Reading is something I wish I had learned in school, but I’m motivated.

Instead of collecting magic tricks, magic cards, baseball cards and comics.. it looks like I’ll be collecting books!

The mention of Richard Feynman takes me back.  I really loved the book they mentioned, “Surely you’re joking MR. Feynman.”  I was fascinated by him because he was involved with creating the atomic bomb.  That’s what first got me interested in physics.  At one point I thought I wanted to become a physicist.

This podcast really made me think.  I will definitely listen to it again.  I’m pretty sure this is the second time I listened to this podcast, but didn’t really absorb it until my trip back from LA.

The School Of Greatness

Alanis Morissette on Fame, Finding Purpose, and Emotional Healing

(itunes) (android) — cant find a link to this

You Ought To Know that Alanis was my first introduction into alternative music.  Offspring, Green Day and Alanis Morissette were the artists that got me out of Rap and into alternative rock.

I think it was about the time when Nirvana was all the rage, but I wasn’t much a Nirvana fan.

I’ve never heard Alanis Morissette in an interview and this conversation with Lewis Howes (host of school of greatness), they go deep.  They had a great connection.

It’s the ‘magic’ I love about podcasts.  People connecting and exchanging energy.  It’s really interesting to hear her story of fame to where she is now.

She was a huge Artist back in the day and I think she was the first female music artist to sell over 30 million records of a single album.

There was this really interesting “tension point,” in their conversation where Lewis Howes brings up Alanis’s “relevance.”  Then she responds with, “do you mean being famous?”  The semantics about the words is really interesting, but you can feel/hear the tension in the conversation.  Almost to a point of misunderstanding.

I loved this interview and if you ever listened to her music, it will take you back.

Interestingly enough, my wife and I recorded a podcast on my show about it.

How To Become Batman

Have you ever heard of a blind person being able to ride their bike around the streets?  That’s what this story is about, it’s about how a person that can’t see, but functions almost as if he can.

So many feelings in this one.  If you have kids, it really does bring out some emotions about teaching and belief in others.

Does believing in somebody give them power?

I think it does and it’s really inspiring.  This is so good! I can see myself getting really addicted to Invisibilia.

Some of you know me as a mobility guy and it’s no secret that I’m a human movement nerd, but these days I’ve been moving away from the importance mobility/stretching and putting emphasis on motor control.

The Bulgarian split squat is a way to kill 2 birds with one stone.  Strengthen the typically weak glutes and stretch out the tight hip flexor.  You also strengthen the hip flexors in this movement.

I needed a refresher on the exercise and came across Elliot Hulse’s Strength camp and Scott Herman Fitness.
